What the calculator includes
- Federal income tax using the 2026 brackets and standard deduction from IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 (standard deduction $16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household). Rates: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%.
- Social Security: 6.2% of wages up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500 (SSA).
- Medicare: 1.45% of all wages, plus the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on wages over $200,000 (single/head of household) or $250,000 (joint — applied here to one salary).
- Pre-tax retirement contributions reduce federal taxable income (not Social Security or Medicare wages) and are subtracted from take-home pay.
- State income tax as a flat effective rate that you enter. It is set to 0% for the nine states that do not tax wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming.
Not included: tax credits (such as the child tax credit), itemized deductions, the new 2025–2028 deductions for tips, overtime and seniors, local/city income taxes, state disability or paid-leave payroll premiums, health-insurance premiums and other payroll deductions. Actual withholding also depends on your W-4. Treat the result as an estimate, not tax advice.
